This past Friday evening, the Petrey family took a trip over to Price Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was able to capture some pictures of Drew’s kids and we wanted to share those with you.

Greetings one and all! I had the most wonderful experience yesterday! I got to meet one of my readers and fans! I was elated to meet him (I think he was star-struck, but who wouldn’t be?) He told me how he has read my column, and I was thrilled to hear of how he loved it, and read it with voracity. I didn’t get my picture made with him because my sister, Molly dropped the ball, and didn’t have hers. Such a shame, as I’m sure my fan wanted a picture with me. He did let my sister know that she needed to get me my own laptop, with which I couldn’t agree more! I would like a Macbook Pro, please.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and I was thrilled to meet and greet my fan. It was an experience I’ll not soon forget.

Love,

Emmi

Summertime an’ the Livin’ is Easy

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Since Monday was the official first day of summer, I started thinking about all of my different summer memories. Which started me to wondering if any of you, our faithful readers, wanted to share your summer memories. I’ll start:

When I was around 7, 8 and 9 years old, my family and I would load up our trailer (camper), and head down to the lake. Staying for two weeks at a time, my dad would drive back and forth to work and my brothers and I would spend our days fishing, swimming, taking hikes, canoeing, building amazing forts, playing games, and roasting marshmallows over the open flames. Ahhh, it was the life! Since we were able to stay in our camper we had all the wonderful amenities of shower, beds, air conditioning, and running water. Many told us that we weren’t really camping, but we were staying outdoors!

Those camping trips are some I’ll never forget, they were so much fun, and I hope to one day share the same experience with my kids.

What about you? We would love to hear your favorite summertime memories.

See you in the comments.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream (Sandwiches!)

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

In our celebration of summer we thought it would be fun to give you a fun, easy recipe for a great summer dessert: Ice Cream Sandwiches!

To make these little treats, all you need to do is:

Make or buy your favorite batch of cookies, fill with your favorite flavor of ice cream, arrange on a baking sheet, and freeze. Once frozen, wrap sandwiches in wax paper and store in an air tight container in the freezer.

DELICIOUS!!

What are some of your favorite summer desserts?

Two Things to Remember…

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Happy First Day of Summer! As is usual this time of year, the days are warmer and folks are starting to turn on their air conditioners. Of course sometimes your air conditioner, for some reason or another, will not turn on. Well, before you give us a call, there are two things you can check, and possibly fix the problem yourself.

1. Check the filter: Make sure to check the filter and see if it needs to be changed. Sometimes if the filter hasn’t been changed, it can restrict proper air flow and keep the cool air from flowing into your home. If you need help changing your filters, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to walk you through the instructions to properly change your filters.

2. Check the breaker: It’s always important to check your breaker,  sometimes when you turn on your A/C the breaker can be switched off.

If the filter doesn’t need changing, and the breaker is ok, then go ahead and give us a call. We are more than happy to be of assistance to you, and want to help you have the coolest, most comfortable summer ever! Please don’t ever hesitate to ask any questions you might have, we’d love to hear from you!

Greetings, friends! We are in the midst of a heatwave, the temps have been in the upper eighties with humidity that Boone rarely sees. I’m staying nice and cool in my office. Yes, you heard that right I have a new office, it’s very nice because I have a door that lets the sunlight in and I love to sleep there in the morning/afternoon. I get to stay with my dad which is always a plus, and I get to stay with my brother, Dustin, with whom I have lots of fun!

We’ve been staying busy here at the office for which we’re very thankful for. We’ve been working hard to get every call that’s come in, and I’m so proud of all of our guys, and the hard work they’ve been doing this week.

Well, I best get going, and go soak up some more sun! What are y’all doing this weekend?

Love from my heart to yours,

Emmi

How To Stay Cool…

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

With the on-set of warmer weather, it’s very easy to get hot. Our mission today is to give you fun and creative ideas on how to stay cool when you’re outside in the blazing heat.

1. Eat Popsicles! Seriously, they’re really good and they help to cool you down when it’s really warm outside.

2. Take a run through the sprinkler. One of my greatest memories as a child was running through the sprinkler, it’s so refreshing and will cool you down in no time.

3. SWIM! Most people do this in the summer, but swimming is a great way to have fun, exercise, and keep cool.

4. Waterguns. Seriously friends, there is nothing more fun than a good ‘ol fashioned watergun war. You’re making memories, and keeping cool. It’s a win-win!

I hope these four ideas will help you have fun and stay cool when outside this summer. Oh, and if you’re having trouble staying cool indoors, you might want to give Mountaineer Heating and Cooling a call, we can help you with that.

Keeping Cool,

Molly Petrey

Can I Get a Ballpark On That?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Hello readers, let me begin by thanking you all for taking the time to read our blog.  We truly have the best customers in the world and we appreciate each and every one of you!  I want to talk to you all today about why we don’t give “ballpark” estimates over the phone.  We often get calls here in our office from folks who are interested in installing a new comfort system in their home and the rightfully want to know how much it’s going to cost.  Some of them understand that this is truly an investment and understand that each one of our proposals is customized to their particular home; some however want to get a “ballpark” over the phone.  We don’t give ballparks for 3 reasons.

  1. We don’t know what size comfort system the home needs.  North Carolina code requires that we has an installing HVACR contractor size our comfort systems based on what’s called a heat loss/heat gain, load calculation.  When we perform a load calculation we take many things into consideration, plug them into a formula and find out how big of a system we need to overcome the amount of heat your home loses in the winter time and how much heat it gains in the summer time.  Only after knowing this can we size a system properly, if a system is undersized it will be very expensive to operate and will never heat and cool properly.  If a system is oversized it will never remove the right amount of humidity from the home in the summer and will cause hot and cold spots in the winter.  A load calculation is the foundation of a custom comfort system.  No exceptions!
  2. We don’t know your homes specific comfort requirements.  We will want to find out if your home has any special needs. For instance, does it have any hot spots or cold spots, is it dry in the winter, is it humid in the summer, and what direction does your front door face.  All of these things make a difference in the selection of your new comfort system and we want to make sure and get it right the first time.
  3. Finally, we don’t know you.  We at Mountaineer Heating and Cooling want to get to know you personally; we enjoy meeting our homeowners and meeting their individual needs.  The only way we can do this effectively is to meet you in person and spend a little time listening.

Again, thanks for taking the time to read our blog and if you are ever over our way we hope you’ll stop in.  We would love to meet you!

In the Good ‘Ol Summertime

2. Take a trip down the slip ‘n slide!

What a great way to cool down on really hot days!

3. Take a trip to the park

Such fun times!

4.  Go get ice cream!

What a great summer treat!

5.  Have a Watermelon Seed Spittin’ Contest!

What a fun, summer pastime!

We hope these ideas will help you to have a fun, memory filled summer! Let us know some of your favorite summer pastimes, and we’ll post them on the blog, too!

Here’s to a great summer!
